Alfredo Maestro

Alfredo Maestro is living proof that people can change. Just a few decades ago, he was making traditional Ribera del Duero wines, with tons of manipulations — we're talking lab-made yeasts, acidification, colorants and more. Today? He's one of Spain's most respected natural winemakers.

He comes from a winemaking family, with holdings in Ribera del Duero as well as the Basque Country. From a young age, he knew that wine was figuratively (and maybe a little bit literally) in his blood. So in 1998, he planted his first vineyard and from the beginning, farmed it organically. After just a few years he began to wonder — why use organic farming methods to then produce a totally manufactured wine?

So he pivoted. He began making pure, vibrant wines, with a consideration for his terroir and his consumer. From Ribera del Duero he expanded into the vineyards around Madrid, known for their steep slopes and granite-studded soils. He's been able to acquire old, nearly forgotten sites with ancient vines, and his wines are some of Spain's most interesting and profound.
