Full, brilliant carnet-red in color, it has clean-cut perfumes with notes of rose petal, sweet spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, fine tobacco, mint, plus a slight whiff of licorice. On the palate it is full-flavored, full-bodied and eloping with suggestions of fresh spices and red fruits. Thanks to the 36 months ageing in large barrels, the tannins are particularly expressive and silky. The fruit makes a strong comeback in the long, sapid aftertaste. All Rose variety Nebbiolo.

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

Professional Reviews

"This wine represents the most important selection of fruit executed at this estate within a small one-hectare parcel. The top-shelf Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena is super precise and sharp with high density. The wine has a hard note that is transmitted across dark fruit, purple berries and exotic spice. That sharpness continues to the palate where you taste mineral nuances and crushed stone. It ages in oak for 36 months. I would give the Riserva more time to flesh out. Production is 5,500 bottles." -Monica Larner

"The 1-hectare Vigna Elena, which was planted with the rare Nebbiolo Rosé in 1991, has been bottled separately as a Riserva since 1997. Winemaker Valter Fissore explains that this results in a leaner body with more tannins, which requires longer maturation. The 2019 presents itself stealthily yet haunting with roses, freesia and strawberry blossom. There are also hints of brushwood and liquorice. But it's really the floral bouquet that asserts itself and discreetly transitions to the flawless, raspberry-saturated palate, where long, smooth and silky tannins intertwine and form well-defined boundaries. The definition of finesse."
