Bergstrom

With Oregon’s Willamette Valley drawing the attention of passionate winemakers and hopeful growers from all over the world—many of whom come for harvest and end up never wanting to leave—it’s easy to forget that the Willamette Valley boasts wildly accomplished native Oregonians as well. Look no further than Josh Bergström, the Portland-born son of a Swedish immigrant, who partnered up with his dad in 1999 to start a vineyard and winery in the Dundee Hills.

25 years on, Bergström is one of the most decorated names in all of Oregon wine, turning out consistently ageworthy and top-rated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Now overseen by both Josh and winemaker Maddy Pasquarelli, the wines show clear vintage variation paired with a throughline of exceptional quality, which is exactly what I look for in the Willamette Valley.

Josh himself is such a personified bridge between Oregon and Burgundy, it’s almost too on-the-nose: after majoring in French, he met his wife Caroline, a Burgundy native, at the Lycée Viticole in Beaune. Together, they were one of the early examples of the Willamette Valley's "French Connection," marrying their love of Burgundian wine and culture with an Oregonian renegade streak.

Josh and Caroline lead by example, running their family domaine in a way they hope inspires all American wineries. Their dedicated farming team oversees 70 biodynamically grown acres across five different vineyards in the Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge and Chehalem Mountains AVAs, incorporating regenerative agriculture practices as well. Starting with a mind-blowing bottle of Sigrid ten years ago, I’ve been cellaring and enjoying these wines since the beginning of my time in Oregon. I believe they’re essential to any domestic collection.
