Bernard Burgaud

Cote Rotie – that bastion of elegant Syrah – has long been one of the world’s main battlefields in the fight between modern and traditional wine-making. But the world isn’t so black and white. The story of Burgaud’s Cote Rotie illustrates how one vigneron has managed to navigate that polemic, with an eye to simply producing the most delicious bottles of Syrah that he and his terroir are capable of.

Bernard Burgaud’s career was long. He inherited vines in 1980, and started bottling own wines in 1982. 36 years later, in 2018, he produced his last vintage. (His son has taken over as of 2019.) We are pleased to offer you that vintage today.

If you had to choose a camp, you would say that he is on the side of tradition. He is one of the few producers of Cote Rotie that still only produces just one wine, a traditional blend that borrows both from the Cote Brune (for power) and the Cote Blonde (elegance). Most of the vessels that he uses for elevage are large and used. His goal is to express the essence of Cote Rotie.

But the modern twists are undeniable. He uses modern techniques in order to qualify the wines for “Haute Valeur Environnementale” certification – essentially a certification that Burgaud is environmentally sustainable both in the vineyards and in the winery. He uses a small percentage (15%) of new barriques in his elevage. The goal is just a little more precision and a little more fruit purity.
