Buchegger

Walter Buchegger’s wines are head-turners. They strike a balance of charming, pure fruit and finesse, with classic Kremstal character—perhaps a little easier-drinking than the Wachau and with a little less power than the Kamptal. I've been known to cellar the top crus (Gebling, Pfarrweingarten, and Holzgasse), but every year what I really look forward to is stocking my fridge with the rosé.

Kremstal's unique character shines in this wine. While loess soils dominate throughout the region, there is also a high percentage of chalk rippling through the bedrock. Often I find the rosé, which comes from vines planted on the old terraced sites, to capture this textural minerality just as well as the vineyard-specific Rieslings.

While these soils have the potential to deliver great wines, exceptional vineyard practices are required to fulfill it. Buchegger, a sixth-generation family estate, follows Austria’s “Kontrolled Integrated Production,” a stricter farming standard than other countries' organics.

The Bucheggers emphasize living and breathing soils and they have not used herbicides or insecticides in over 25 years. Using only selection massale vines for as long as the estate has operated (since 1893, but the vineyards much longer), the wines are literally rooted in a diversity of genetic vine material deriving from centuries of Austrian viticulture.
