Cabecas do Reguengo

Along the far eastern border with Spain, up in the Serra de São Mamede mountains, lies a magical place perfect for making the types of wines we love. Vineyards — really just tiny gardens — are planted 500+ meters up. Here, temperatures drop, especially at night, creating perfect conditions for high acid grapes to be harvested.

In 2009 João Afonso purchased an abandoned farm, un-covering a plethora of un-grafted centenarian vines. Now everything is farmed by hand, organically or biodynamically, to allow this wild terrain, the opposite of the flat lands below, to express itself clearly.

Cellar work is also the opposite of industrial, with fermentation and aging in neutral vessels, mostly left to their own devices. Occasional battonage might be employed to help with stabilization, along with enough SO2 at bottling to keep them sound.

Tasting these wines was a revelation. We are a lucky bunch to be living in a time where we get to enjoy the forgotten fruits of someone’s labor 100 years ago. Nothing else in Portugal, nothing else in wine tastes like these. The comparisons below are only an attempt to triangulate your expectations. But really these are singular, mineral-imbued, terroir driven wines with a classic flair and elegance only begotten from prime real estate and a thoughtful winemaker.
