Camarda

In the decades since now-benchmark producers like Benanti, Salvo Foti, and Terre Nere revolutionized Sicily's winemaking culture — shifting decidedly away from the bulk wine trade that dominated the island's viticulture at the time — a staggering amount of very talented, artisanal producers have emerged.

Superstars like COS and Passopiscaro dominate the professional reviews and geeky blog posts, but for every Frank Cornelissen, there's an unknown producer making high quality, traditional wines — often at much lower prices — that, for whatever reason, haven't yet garnered the press of their more critically lauded neighbors.

Camarda, a tiny estate situated in the volcanic foothills of Mount Etna, is one of those lesser-known producers. Save for a quick mention in one of Eric Asimov's New York Times columns a few years ago, Camarda and their wines are largely unknown in the states. After tasting the new vintage last week, we found ourselves asking why. It just didn't add up.

The wines are good — like, really good — as good as you'd expect from something born of 90-year-old vines (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Caricante, Minnella & Inzolia), deeply rooted in ancient, volcanic vineyards. Gaetano, the owner/vigneron, works his 2 hectares as he always has — by himself, organically, and exclusively by hand, as the precariously steep and terraced vineyards make it impossible to introduce any kind of mechanization.

Gaetano's daughter's day job is in the cellars at Calabretta, and there's a similar approach at the two wineries, with minimal intervention and traditional methods. Like with the best Italian cooking, you source the highest quality ingredients and let them speak loudly and clearly. If you ask us, great terroir and 90-year-old vines are some pretty great 'ingredients', and we’re very interested in what they have to say!
