Chanin Wine Company

Gavin Chanin started early (already working for Californian legend Jim Clendenen at age 17 and making wine under his own label at age 19), and his recent releases have proven that this is a label he deserves.

He may be youthful but the secret to his wines rests on geological processes that are millions of years in the working. There is immense precision and care with which he selects the blocks for his wines. For example, Los Alamos Vineyard is massive – almost 300 acres – and quality is highly variable. Chanin’s block of Chardonnay is the highest, coolest, has the best drainage and lowest yields of the entire vineyard.

At Sanford & Benedict – arguably the most important and historic vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA – the soil is unique due to a high presence of chert pebbles (depicted above), particularly near the top of the vineyard. Chanin worked with the owners to replant one of these prime blocks, in exchange for a long-term commitment to that block. These wines come from a winemaker truly in tune with his terroirs, and the results in the bottle show it.
