Chateau Des Vergers

With the superstars of Beaujolais commanding higher and higher prices (we're looking at you, M. Foillard) it's easy to lose track of the incredible value to be had in Beaujolais, and how much incredible wine is made by artisans whose names we're just becoming familiar with.

Take Lantignié, one of the villages of "Beaujolais-Villages." There's a push to have it elevated to Beaujolais Cru status, joining the likes of Fleurie and Morgon (which is just a kilometer away). And there's a solid basis for that push: Lantignié has an ancient history of wine growing, serious terroir with complex soils, and devoted young growers looking to express all that in a modern vernacular.

All Lantignié is missing right now, according to the French bureaucrats who decide these kinds of things, is a little name recognition. But we're confident growers like Cosima Bassouls are going to change that fast.

Cosima is one of those young growers working these ancient terroirs with contemporary priorities. Her family domaine is farmed not just organically, but along regenerative principles. More work, but it's so much better for the wines and the soils. After a semi-carbonic fermentation she uses the family's centuries-old press, another slow, painstaking process that makes better results in her view: a clear wine that doesn't need fining or filtration. The fermentation finishes in concrete with native yeasts. She uses a little sulfur to ensure stability after the trip across the ocean.

This is, of course, a throwback to the state of Beaujolais winemaking before industrial processes arrived to speed everything and reduce labor and risk, at the cost of flattening the wines and reducing the sense of terroir. Although we don't stock them, or write about them, industrial wines still dominate Beaujolais production (estimates range from 60-80%). We believe Cosima's approach is where Beaujolais' future lies, not to mention the way to make superior wines.
