Chateau Moulin Pey-Labrie

When we visited Kermit Lynch's producers in Bordeaux a few years back, there was plenty to fall in love with: the home-cooked meal of local duck roasted over an open fire, the homemade canelés desserts, and most of all, the incredible, mature Bordeaux of Pey-Labrie. For only the second time since we visited, we have the good fortune to be able to offer these mature wines, straight from the cellar. (Sorry, Kermit didn't ship us any of the duck or dessert.)

Why are these wines so special? First, there's the sheer artisanship: a family, working organically and by hand on a small scale, in the heart of Bordeaux, where large-scale production dominates and organic practices are still rare.

Second, there is overlooked terroir. Canon-Frosac's vines are dotted on limestone hillsides very similar to what you find in the best parts of St.-Émilion, although here you find ancient fossilized starfish among the rocks. Canon-Fronsac's Merlot and Cabernet Franc, always among the greatest, were pricier than bottles from St.-Émilion and Pomerol well into the 1800s! They had a bit of trouble recovering from phylloxera in the late 19th century, but the terroir is the same as it's always been.
