Cigliuti

The domaine is tiny, family-run, and relatively simple to understand. They make a couple Barberas, a Langhe nebbiolo, and two Barbarescos from two different vineyards. The two Barbarescos are at quite high altitudes for the Langhe at about 350 meters above sea level (asl). By comparison, the famous cru of Monvigliero, the highest in Barolo, is at 300 meters asl.

The main difference between Cigliuti's two sites is the concentration of limestone. Serraboella has a lot of it, and as a consequence the wine it produces -- like in the limestone-rich vineyards of Serralunga -- is deep, concentrated and structured. It requires aging.

The Vie Erte comes from sandier soils with little limestone, and like wine from the limestone-poor vineyards of Verduno, it has more finesse and approachability. It is the wine to open today if you'd like to get to know this producer.
