Clos des Mourres

Most love stories end with a wedding—but the story of Clos des Mourres actually begins with one. With the marriage of Ingrid and Jean-Philippe, both natives of the Southern Rhône, two family’s holdings were joined and these two natural wine devotees established a domaine all their own.

The love at Clos des Mourres doesn't stop after that of husband and wife; the domaine itself is named after a traditional dinner enjoyed with Jean-Philippe’s vigneron grandfather—a simply dressed salad of wild dandelion leaves to accompany a potato roasted in the coals of a fireplace (mourres refers to the salad leaves).

Of course, it’s also a celebration of love for the earth, and its bounty. The couple farms their 10 hectares organically, with biodynamic influence; the goal here is to encourage a healthy, diverse biome. The couple believes firmly in doing all the dirty work—it’s impossible to call your endeavor artisanal if you're not using your hands and getting a little muddy.

The domaine is situated just outside Cairanne, and its limestone-clay soils give the wines great lift and minerality. In a recent tasting of natural wines, we were blown away by two cuvées, the crisp Pompette blanc and the À Table, a juicy, semi-carbonic Syrah. We're really excited by just how well-executed these wines are, especially considering the fact that there’s no added SO2 at any point in the winemaking.
