What is this wine?
Domaine Ramonet, one of Burgundy’s legendary producers, is most famous for its peerless white wines from Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny, and Montrachet itself. Les Caillerets is widely considered Chassagne’s finest premier cru, named for its stony, limestone-rich soils that yield wines of striking elegance and longevity. The 2017 vintage was a return to classicism after several warmer years, producing whites that are fresh, mineral-driven, and beautifully balanced.

Why get this wine?
Ramonet is synonymous with greatness in white Burgundy, and Les Caillerets sits at the very top of the premier cru hierarchy—often likened to grand cru quality. The 2017 vintage combines accessibility with age-worthiness, making this a rare chance to enjoy Ramonet at its most refined. For collectors, this is a benchmark bottling of one of Burgundy’s great terroirs.

What does this wine taste like?
Lemon, green apple, and pear with layers of white flowers, hazelnut, and crushed stone. Taut and mineral, with vibrant acidity and a long, saline, chalk-driven finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from 2024–2037. Decant if opening now. Superb with lobster, scallops, sole meunière, or roast poultry.

There are dozens of excellent producers in Chassagne-Montrachet, but Domaine Ramonet is widely considered to be the best. That is quite remarkable given that the domaine is only three generations old (a spring chicken in Burgundy).

A young Pierre Ramonet first began buying small parcels of land in Chassagne in the late 1920s, when there were deals to be had. Today his grandsons Jean-Claude and Noel have been at the helm for over 30 years. They are expert farmers and winemakers and have the talent and experience needed to make magical Chardonnay.

"Very pretty, cool and elegant aromas are comprised by plenty of citrus elements to the floral, resin and mineral reduction nuances. There is lovely intensity to the beautifully delineated and almost pungently mineral-driven middle weight flavors that terminate in a chiseled and lemon-tinged finish that, much like the Chaumées, really fans out as it sits on the palate. If I was being a bit picky, I might reproach the wine for displaying a bit of finishing warmth but overall, this is quite lovely and while it should age gracefully on its balance, it's not so structured as to be completely unapproachable after only 5ish years."

"One of the highlights of the range is the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a striking wine that soars from the glass with scents of green pear, orange oil, marzipan, drawn butter and lemon. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and textural but incisive, with racy acids, good depth and tension at the core and a long, chalky finish." -William Kelley

"Bright and luscious, with juicy acidity carrying the peach, lemon and apple flavors, accented by underlying herb and mineral notes. Vibrant and balanced, featuring a lingering finish of vanilla and toasty oak. Best from 2022 through 2028."
