Domaine Aleofane

Natacha Chave takes a philosophical approach to winemaking—fitting for a winemaker with a Masters degree in philosophy. Hailing from a Rhône Valley winemaking family, she pursued an academic career before returning home to make wine on her own land, first in Saint-Joseph and later in Crozes-Hermitage. When we tasted her wine for the first time, a couple of years ago, we were blown away by her ability to capture terroir in a bottle.

These wines demand attention: they evolve in the glass, and are simultaneously deeply pleasurable and a study in the various iterations of Rhône Valley Syrah. This is the kind of wine we love to drink, and the kind of wine we like to sell. They are honest, true to the traditions of the region and yet they are still accessible and deeply drinkable, even in youth.

She farms organically (she’s certified) and with biodynamic techniques. She's experimenting with new plantings of the old Sérine clone from massale selection. Sulfur use is minimal. These days, she’s a darling of the natural wine scene in Europe, so almost none of the little she makes comes to America.
