Domaine Aux Moines

Our last visit to Domaine aux Moines was eye-opening. Tasting through her gorgeous lineup of Chenin Blancs, it was clear that Tessa Laroche is a gifted, diligent winemaker with a compelling and clear-eyed vision of what Savennières should be.

In fact, this is not just a reference producer for Roche-Aux-Moines, the teensy sub-appellation of Savennières, but for the Chenin Blanc grape itself.

Why? Because Chenin is a grape with many facets, and Tessa’s Roche-Aux-Moines manages to balance so many of them. Like a lot of other Savennières, it’s a dry white with the waxy density and honeyed opulence redolent of something sweeter. But Tessa’s version also has a liveliness, minerality, and delicacy that lots of other Savennières miss.

Unsurprisingly, it comes from great terroir with a history of viticulture that goes back nearly a thousand years. Roche-Aux-Moines rises steeply over the Loire, and its schistous bedrock is practically at the surface in Tessa’s vineyards, which surely contributes mineral character. Of course, it helps that the organic viticulture is first-rate, too.
