Domaine Comte Abbatucci

Everyone who visits Corsica comes back converted. It’s the greatest. The food, the people and (the one thing you can take with you) the wine. While there are now a dozen or so of the Island’s best winemakers who are imported to the U.S., the wines of Comte Abbatucci continue to stand out as among the very finest examples of Corsican winemaking.

It’s not actually too surprising that current proprietor and winemaker Jean-Charles Abbatucci would be at the very top tier on this island. If you visit the main port city of Ajaccio (which you should!) you’ll see his family name all over the place. There have been politicians, business leaders and other pillars of the community among the Abbatuccis for generations. Indeed Jean-Charles’ namesake was a general who fought alongside another well known Corsican named Napoleon Bonaparte.

But family history aside, Jean-Charles is a man who is extremely devoted to his vineyards and the island’s history of winemaking. He has helped make Corsican wine a wine geek favorite not only by making delicious wines. The family has also worked incredibly hard to preserve the island's unique grape varieties. Jean-Charles' father, Antoine Abbatucci, found and planted many of these nearly unknown grapes in the '60s and, since then, the family has continued to protect, study and... drink them!

In the vineyards he practices a type of agriculture that is far beyond simply “organic”. Restorative, regenerative, sustainable, biodynamic . . . all these descriptors apply but they still don’t encapsulate the work Jean-Charles puts into his vines. For several years he has been experimenting with using only seawater, yes directly from the Mediterranean (he’s the Comte, so he gets special permission to do this), as a spray for vine protection.

All of this adds up to wines that are not just profound and delicious, but are like living displays of history. But don’t just look at them, they are still very much meant for drinking!
