Domaine de Chevillard

Savoie sits high in the French Alps, wedged between Switzerland and Italy, a dramatic landscape of limestone cliffs, glacial valleys, and steep mountain vineyards. It’s also one of the last great un(der)explored wine regions of France.

These limestone-laden hillsides produce wines that combine textural depth with distinctive alpine freshness. High elevation and cool temperatures make this one of the best places to find wines with real definition and raciness in the age of global warming. Add in a new wave of thoughtful, progressive growers, and Savoie is poised to become your next favorite wine region.

One of the most exciting producers in this Savoyarde new wave is Domaine de Chevillard, the project of young vigneron Matthieu Goury in the village of Saint-Pierre-d’Albigny. Goury grew up in the tiny hamlet of Chevillard, where his grandfather farmed a small mixed holding of cows, tobacco, and a few vines whose fruit was sold to the local co-op. After studying viticulture in Beaune and gaining experience abroad, including stints with Chapoutier in the Rhône and Jasper Hill in Australia, Goury returned home to breathe new life into his family domaine.

Today he farms about a dozen hectares on marl and limestone slopes in the shadow of the Bauges mountains, working biodynamically and focusing on historic local grapes like Jacquère and Altesse. In the cellar, fermentations are natural and élevage is patient and intentional. Goury typically ages his Jacquère for 24 months and his Roussette for 36 months, allowing the wines to develop depth and texture while preserving their alpine clarity and crunch.

The results are beautifully pure, invigorating wines that are a pleasure to drink. Imagine a bit of the raw mineral punch of the Jura combined with the aromatic intensity and texture of classic Alsace and you’re getting close. But Savoie, at its best, is a singular region that becomes more compelling the deeper you dig.
