Domaine Hubert Lignier does things the right way--their way--from farming to fermentation to élevage. They practice "sensible combat" (lutte raisonnee) in the vineyards and don't use herbicides. Their wines are organic but not certified. They don't have to be. They don't need to pay some outsider to come in and tell them what to do. They don't give a damn and the wines are proof of their greatness. Use of new oak barrels is low--up to 50% on the Grand Crus Charmes Chambertin and Clos de la Roche.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

BH 91
"An attractively fresh and surprisingly elegant array offers up notes of earthy dark currant, plum and a whisper of spice. There is good energy and delineation to the lighter weight flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the delicious, moderately firm and more complex finale." -Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées suffered some millerandage this vintage and produced particularly small bunches. It has a very perfumed, floral bouquet with earthy tannins imparted by the 30% whole-bunch fruit. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a silky texture and a gentle, caressing finish that is utterly charming." -Vinous

Robert Parker

"Lignier's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées is showing nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, sweet soil tones, licorice, dark chocolate and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with a chassis of rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity. This will require patience." -William Kelley

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

The parcel in “Les Seuvrées” is in the southern tier of Gevrey and sits immediately beneath the Grand Cru “Mazoyeres Chambertin”. This wine, one of the most important of the domaine in terms of size, is a bit more sturdy than the Morey Saint Denis and is a real show-stopper, displaying its classic Gevrey meatiness. The vines are old: planted between 1938 and 1966.
