Domaine Jean Tardy

The nucleus of Domaine Jean Tardy dates from over 100 years ago. In 1920 Grandpa Victor Tardy started working the vineyards of Meo-Camuzet. In 1945 Etienne Camuzet gave some vineyards to Victor on a sharecropping basis. His fellow vineyard worker or "tacheur" was Henri Jayer. Monsieur Camuzet gave Henri some vineyards too. When son Jean Tardy began working for Meo-Camuzet in 1966 the arrangement continued.

Starting in the 1980's additional vineyards were purchased by Jean Tardy. The final year for the sharecropping contracts with Meo-Camuzet was 2007. Since then the Tardy family has been producing wine from vineyards they own outright.

The domaine is small, about 5 hectares in total. Farming is organic, no herbicides or pesticides, the soils are ploughed and they use natural compost in the vineyards. The grapes are 100% destemmed followed by a seven day cold soak to extract color and flavor. The winemaking is gentle with an emphasis on purity and intensity. The wines mature on their lees for as long as possible before their first racking. New oak is kept at a minimum, the Hautes-Cotes de Nuits and villages level wines generally have less than 25% to 30% new oak. These are traditional, precise and elegant wines.
