Domaine Nerantzi

Without a doubt Nerantzi Mitropoulos is one of the most interesting people we’ve ever met. A former professional coach to the Greek Olympic wrestling team, his physique is indeed imposing — he’s light on his feet and has the tension of a pugilist about to pounce. He spent most of our visit quoting ancient philosophers or discussing the merits of a long and happy marriage. He opened twice as many wines as we expected, a combination of experimental bottlings, back-vintage treasures from his own cellar, or wines that he wanted to blind-taste us on.

His daughter has fond memories of her parents making wine in their cramped city apartment, and as soon as he was able, Nerantzi purchased a plot of vines in the Serres region. Its soils are ancient — he’s found millennia-old pottery shards and even intact amphorae — and fertile, with lots of iron-rich clay. It’s always been an agricultural area. In antiquity, the nearby river was revered as a god, and the neighboring mountain is home to a mythical oracle of Dionysius. It’s unsurprisingly a terrific place to grow grapes and make wine.

Over the decades, Nerantzi has amassed a little over 10 hectares of vines, plus olive and fruit trees. He’s worked tirelessly to bring attention to the wines of Serres, and in the early 2000s managed to get official “Appellation of Origin” recognition for the region. After graduation from winemaking school in Burgundy, his daughter Evanthia has been an integral part of the team for the better part of a decade; with her background and attention to detail, she’s the academic, straight-laced yin to her father’s boisterous, spirited yang.
