Dr. Heger

After a few months at the famous enology school of Geisenheim, Joachim Heger decided he's rather be a doctor, like his grandfather Dr. Max Heger. We all need to thank Joachim's wife Silvia for focusing his attention and helping him see his way back to wine, for without her we would be missing out on Germany's best Pinot Noir.

Germany and Pinot Noir have had a tumultuous affair over the last several hundred years. It's only been in the last few decades where climate, clonal vine material, site selection, modern technology, and human experience have finally coalesced to give us world class wines. Mimus, Dr. Max Heger's son and Joachim's father is who we can thank for most of those innovations (except the weather of course).

His pursuit of quality vinegrowing and winemaking was years ahead of its time. For instance, planting Clos de Vougeot and Dijon cuttings back in the 50's and studying vine genetics with an eye for quality rather than quantity way before it was the norm. Joachim has followed in his father's footsteps and continued this tradition by stopping the use of pesticides and herbicides and using a careful Burgundian (really Henri Jayer) approach in the cellar.

The wines we can enjoy today are greatly underappreciated compared to their quality. Whether his every day Pinot or his Grosses Gewaches single vineyard expressions, these wines are mineral, layered, focused and precise. Love Pinot Noir? You will love Dr. Heger.
