Dumien-Serrette

Ever since the retirement of legendary traditionalists like Noël Verset and Marcel Juge, it’s been a lot harder to find truly old school Cornas. It is a region that has seen its share of modernization, making the hunt for truly traditional, post-war style Syrah increasingly difficult. We've found a compelling answer in Dumien-Serrette — a fixture in the village since the 1500s, but bottling their own wines only since the 1980s.

Their holdings are minuscule, totaling just over two hectares, primarily situated in the extraordinarily steep Patou vineyard just south of the village. This specific site offers a fascinating and somewhat atypical terroir. Alongside the classic crumbling granite that gives Cornas its iron-fisted structure, Patou features a significant amount of sand. This geological quirk acts as a natural buffer, softening the typically fierce tannins of the appellation and giving the wines an inherent elegance and approachability in their youth. The farming here is entirely organic, relying completely on manual labor to navigate the treacherous incline.

The family's commitment to the past is most evident in the cellar. They rely on whole-cluster fermentation, foot treading, an old-fashioned basket press, and aging in neutral barrels that are often many years old.
