Ficomontanino

Maria Sole Gianelli inherited a small family property and was able to single handedly take it in a brave and exciting new direction.

The small collection of vineyards was planted on a hill in far southeast Tuscany, near the borders of Umbria and Lazio, by Maria's grandfather. He purchased the property in the 1960s to pursue his hobbies of horse breeding and making olive oil and wine. Maria's father upped the production a bit and commercialized things in order to start selling some wine.

His approach was international in style, with an emphasis on power and points. But when Maria took over in 2014 she did an almost complete 180 degree turn towards wines of low intervention and purity of terroir. Inspired by her studies at the Slow Food University of Culinary arts she began using biodynamic practices and focusing on biodiversity throughout the property. She now uses just the bare minimum of sulphur sprays, and eschews all other interventions.

In the cellar she is increasingly hands off, inspired by natural winemakers like Dettori in Sardegna, as well as ARPEPE in Valtellina, where her current cellar assistant used to work. The focus is on harmony and balance and on displaying the unique terroir of her tiny slice of Tuscany.
