Finca Torremilanos

Regions with one or a few standout producers can often feel littered with imitators of that greatness. Ribera del Duero is one such place. A lot of the wines — even if they are very well made, and very high quality — are cloaked in tons of new oak. Castilla y Léon gets hot, and so the grapes get super duper ripe if harvest isn’t perfectly calibrated. These wineries might be looking to emulate Vega Sicilia or Pingus, but they likely aren’t celebrating their own unique terroirs or techniques.

At Finca Torremilanos, it’s a different story. Torremilanos is the DO’s second-oldest winery — just after the legendary Vega Sicilia. Its founder, Pilar Pérez Albéniz, was actually instrumental in the founding of the appellation, back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. She’s still at the helm, with her two sons in charge of winemaking and sales.

Torremilanos farms their 200 hectares of vines biodynamically. Even though it’s easier to farm biodynamically in warm, dry Ribera del Duero than say, humid Galicia, the scale here is impressive. For reference, 200 hectares is more than half the total acreage of Central Park. They have their own cooper on site, so each barrel is crafted to the bodega’s exacting specifications. From bud break to harvest to aging, the family is able to makes sure every drop of wine is simply perfect. They’re not trying to imitate the big names; rather, they’re taking everything that makes them unique and turning them up to 11.
