Flavio Roddolo is a living time machine. If you visited him today, you would find exactly the same winery that was there 20 years ago, or even earlier. His wines are like that, too. They are for the patient. "I bottle my wine when I feel like it," he says. These are traditional Barolo and Nebbiolo, in a style that comes from inclination and history rather than ideology. He learned wine by copying his father in the winery, and he never saw a reason to change. So these are immensely structured, brooding wines of intensity and extreme personality. It's no wonder that patience is required. Roddolo has plenty of old vines and he has never let chemicals touch them. He works his vineyards obsessively, and can feel a little out of sorts when he is not among them. In the winery, everything is natural and there is no fining, filtration, or added yeasts. He has only six hectares and is able to do everything himself.
