Gregoire Hoppenot seems to have come out of nowhere, since just a couple of years ago there was no wine and now his range of Fleuries is starting to show up at restaurants and on social media accounts. But the truth is that he has been building towards this “debut” for some time now. First working and managing Maison Trenel et Fils, a negociant in Burgundy and Beaujolais that is owned by Chapoutier, and then interning with Pierre-Marie Chermette of Domaine Vissoux to learn the ins and outs of making classic Beaujolais in the “burgundian” method. Gregoire’s formula for making great wine is a familiar one to those of us who follow the top producers in Beaujolais. His farming is conscientious and free of chemicals and in the cellar he prefers semi-carbonic macerations and aging in a combination of tanks and used oak barrels. The focus is on transferring the unique terroirs of Fleurie, with its iconic pink granite soils, into elegant, supple wine.Indeed lovers of silky, aromatic Gamay with generous fruit and underlying savory, mineral notes will definitely want to give these wines a try. And the best news is that the pricing is even more old-school than the winemaking.
