Canonica’s Barolo Paiagallo 2020 continues his tradition of low-intervention, deeply expressive winemaking. Sourced from a tiny parcel on the slopes just above the village of Barolo, this wine is made with native yeasts, long macerations, and nothing added but patience. No fining, no filtration—just a pure, living expression of Nebbiolo and place.

The 2020 vintage leans a touch riper and softer than the more austere 2019, but make no mistake: this is still traditional Barolo in its rawest, most captivating form. Wild red berries, dried roses, orange peel, and dusty herbs lead the way, with tannins that are firm but finely knit. There’s an earthy, almost feral streak here that gives the wine personality and a sense of total authenticity.

"The 2020 Barolo Paiagallo is deep, fleshy and imposing, with terrific balance and notable palate presence. Macerated cherry, rose petal, blood orange and chalk are all beautifully delineated. The 2020 offers gorgeous depth and tons of pure energy to match. My only quibble is with its slightly elevated alcohol. Creamy, silky tannins wrap it all together in style.
