Left Grand Cru Chablis

Chablis is the motherland of crisp, unoaked and mineral-driven Chard. It's where it was invented. Chablis' chalky soils and cool climate make perfectly crisp, racy, white wine that tastes a little different than Chardonnay from anywhere else in the world, even the rest of Burgundy.


One of the long standing "classic" producers of Chablis is the Domaine Louis-Michel. This family owned and operated estate has been producing Chablis for almost 200 years. The Domaine was the first in Chablis to make 100% stainless steel, oak-free wine (they thought it showed the grape and terroir flavors better).

Today it is Guillaume Michel who is at the helm, and he farms and makes the wine in much the same way that it was done by his ancestors. Yes, some innovations have taken hold, but in the end the focus of the domaine is on pure, terroir driven wines.

"Reduction dominates the nose at present. On the palate the lacy middle weight flavors possess a gorgeous texture while delivering excellent delineation and persistence on the balanced finale. This elegant and highly refined effort dances across the palate and it too is really quite promising yet because of it's almost delicate mouthfeel, it could be enjoyed young if that's your preference."

"The 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir is another success, bursting with sweet aromas of vine blossom, citrus fruits, wet stones and white flowers. Full-bodied, ample and seamless, it's bright and satiny, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, precise finish. Guillaume Michel presides over this important 22-hectare estate, which has long been the reference for tank-fermented and matured Chablis, a style that the Michel family did much to popularize in the 1980s. Intense and tensile wines are the calling card here, pure and unadorned in style and consistently high in quality. Indeed, I sometimes think that Louis Michel is the most underrated of Chablis's larger domaines. The 2020 vintage is a real success here and likely the domaine's best since 2017. Some cuvées will see a slightly longer than usual élevage due to glass shortages, but I suspect that will only enhance their quality." -Robert Parker
