Insula Vinus

Insula Vinus is a young endeavor, founded by Paulo Machado in 2006. Paulo also helped launch the Azores Wine Company, probably the best known Azores wines on the market (albeit relatively still very unknown). He’s a native of Pico Island — home to the archipelago’s (and Portugal’s) tallest peak — and a highly trained oenologist and agrarian engineer.

Grapes and viticulture were introduced to the island almost as soon as they were discovered, in the 15th century. Legends abound as to who bought what varieties from where, but DNA profiling has recently revealed that the Azores Verdelho is genetically identical to Madeira Verdelho, and that that Verdelho has a parent-offspring relationship to Arinto dos Açores, the most widely-planted variety. Both are related to Savagnin from the Jura.
