Jean Rijckaert

Jean Rijckaert walked so that Domaine du Pelican (and the Marquis d’Angerville) could run.

Way back in ’98, after a decade of working around the Mâcon, Jean purchased 4 hectares in Viré and 5 hectares in Arbois. This quite a risky move! The Jura was largely considered a curiosity, a viticultural backwater with some distinctive styles and a handful of iconic producers, but few outsiders had staked their claims.

Prior to taking the leap into making his own wine, Jean was a cofounder of the Mâcon negociant house Verget; this helped cement his love for the Mâcon, but it was his personal passion for the Jura that led him to Arbois. Like in Burgundy, Chardonnay remained a large part of his focus, but now he was also able to play around with unique varieties like Savagnin and Poulsard.

Rijckaert’s wines are all farmed organically and with a focus on biodiversity, on both macro and micro scales. We’re focusing on the Jura wines today: an old-vine Chardonnay, a long-aged (but topped-up, or ouillé) Savagnin, and a juicy, chillable Poulsard. The Chardonnay comes from soils of limestone and marl (marine sediment dating back to the middle Jurassic period; the Savagnin sits on equally ancient gray and blue marl stone soils. The Poulsard comes from iron-rich clay soils that help to impart heft and concentration.

The mineral signature of each grape’s distinct terroir is huge: Chardonnay and limestone are obviously old friends, and they get along swimmingly here. The wine is lifted and saline, with flavors of white and green fruit and flowers. Savagnin loves marl, and these soils help bring out the grape’s savory, spicy side, with flavors of ginger, confit citrus, and crushed rocks. And Poulsard needs clay soils to give it depth and breadth of flavor and structure. This one is silky and juicy, bursting with flavors of strawberry-rhubarb, pomegranate and sour cherry.

We love the Rijckaert lineup — these are mineral-driven and elegant wines, and if you squint, you just mind find some Burgundian sensibilities in the winemaking.
