Joaquin

Raffaele Pagano could have had a pretty easy life. He’s the 4th generation heir to a family wine business based in Salerno that owns three wineries and makes a couple million bottles a year. But that was not his destiny. Raffaele wanted to make his own wines following his own vision of what they should be.

So in the early aughts he purchased a tiny parcel of Fiano di Avellino in Lapio and another small parcel of Aglianico in Paternopoli, on the southeastern edge of the Taurasi DOCG, a few miles northeast of Avellino. He was then able to purchase a very tiny vineyard on the famous island of Capri. He now farms 3 hectares in total, that’s it. And there are no plans to add more.

To call the farming organic would be a sizable understatement. Raffaele eschews any chemical additions or treatments of any kind, but he goes beyond that. He has never plowed his vines and allows a continual grass cover, wildflowers etc. to help maintain peak biodiversity. This is an extremely special vineyard and the grapes are treated with the utmost care and respect.
