Kvaszinger

Vineyards change hands for all types of reasons. The Kvazszingers won their Hatalos vineyard in a card game, just like Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon! And, almost 100 years later Kvaszinger is gambling again, this time on the success of dry Tokaji wines made from the regal Furmint grape.

Hatalos is in Hungary's Tokaji region, famous for the decadently sweet wines that have been the favorites of Popes and Politburo's over the centuries. But today—in the right hands—it also makes unique whites that can easily please a crowd.

The "right hands" thing is essential: Tokaji is not a small region, and its many wineries are far from equal. What the Kvaszinger family won in that fateful hand was prime vineyard land. The gentle slopes of Olaszliszka have soils with a complex amalgam of broken stones and volcanic substrata. This is what gives their Furmints their particular mineral edge and gentle smokey herbaceousness on the finish.

The Kvaszingers got (relatively) lucky again during the Soviet era. They were removed from their land to go work for the state-run wine factory. But their hilly vineyard was too difficult for for the Soviets to farm, so it survived, largely unscathed by chemical-heavy Soviet farming practices.

And now that Laszlo Kvaszinger (great-grandson of the card player) and his sons have the land back, they're making some delicious wines. They craft their wines painstakingly, fermenting with natural yeast, aiming to make a wine that is true to their special piece of land, as well as their heritage and history.
