Le Clos du Caillou

We recently tasted stellar new releases from Le Clos du Caillou in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Things started brightly with their insanely fresh, crisp, detailed white wines and a crunchy Côtes du Rhone rouge. But when the Châteauneuf Tradition hit my glass, I was immediately transfixed. This is EXACTLY the type of fresh, energetic, spicy red that I love. My tasting note was direct and to the point: “Gorgeous. Baby Rayas”

Those of you already familiar with this estate are probably chuckling because, unbeknownst to me, Le Clos du Caillou is right down the road from the iconic Château Rayas, and shares the same sandy soils (with a touch of quartz and galets as well) that infuse the wines with such finesse and delicacy.

The rest of the tasting was a master class in precision and elegance — each wine more delicious than the next. The reds are incredibly pure with high-toned, spicy, black and red fruits, and lively acidity. The white wines are the definition of freshness, verve and mineral crunch. My notes for Le Caillou blanc just reads "dynamite."

These wines will make lovers of old-school Châteauneuf swoon. If you think all Châteauneuf is oversaturated and inky, taste these and be converted. And if you’re a lover of Château Rayas and find the quadruple digit prices a bit hard to swallow, do yourself a favor and taste these wines. They are the real deal.
