Los Loros

Juanfra is the mastermind behind Los Loros. These singular wines come from in and around the town of Arfo in the tiny DO of Valle de Guimar. Steep, rugged, and dry the region contains some of Europe's highest elevation vineyards topping out at 1400 meters.

Juanfra's ancient vineyards are planted on terraces and grow untrained. He works everything by hand and uses no modern chemicals. Even though the area is dry and sun drenched the trade winds of the Atlantic keeps things cool, allowing the wines of grapes to retain acidity and low potential alcohol

Juanfra is committed to protecting the ancient vineyards of his island home. Along with the vineyards he farms in and around Arafo, he is working to restore abandoned vineyards in an area known as La Dehesas at around 1400 meters. The terrain is extremely steep and rugged and only reachable with special equipment which is why they were abandoned to begin with.

winemaking at Los Loros is as ancient as the vines. The reds often have lots of stem inclusion and elevage is done in many vessels ranging from stainless steel to manzanilla barrels from Jerez. While winemaking is definitely on the natural side of things there is no dogma here and tiny amounts of sulfur and occasional fining is used to benefit the final wine.

The wines of Los Loros are as wild and exotic as the place they come from. They are delicate and fresh yet unctuous and mineral. The fact that they are high altitude volcanic wine comes through in their layers of complexity. For lovers of the wines of Etna, these qualities will not be unfamiliar. While some of his wines are delicious young these wines will age and only increase in complexity. The fruit becomes more savory revealing layers and layers of volcanic minerality. Patience does have its rewards.
