Pinot Noirs that are sensual and age worthy along with Chardonnays that are mineral driven with layers of complex fruit have made the Willamette Valley world famous and thus the wine highly sought after. The down side to this of course is that along with all those accolades and recognition the prices for the best form the Beaver state has to offer have shot up.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWhen I first tasted with Matt Bresnson I was immediately drawn to an almost old school Oregon quality to the wines he makes under the banner of Love and Squalor. These are serious wines but the cheeky name and irreverently lovely labels allude to the fact that they don't take themselves too seriously. They are not some slick attempt at making something that is facsimile of Burgundy but rather elegant yet rustic wines that with tere forestry aromas and crunchy fruit point the the rugged conifer covered slopes of the Pacific Northwest. Matt Berson makes Gamay, and he makes it like someone with nothing to prove. Berson got pulled out of the restaurant grind in 2003 by what he calls a band of marauding Oregon winemakers, then went and worked harvests in New Zealand, Napa, Germany and Argentina before setting up his winery in an unglamorous corner of Portland. His approach is stubbornly hands-off: organic fruit from growers he's known for a decade, whole clusters, a partial carbonic ferment, eleven months in neutral barrels, and a small dose of sulfur as the only addition. It comes in light on its feet and low in alcohol, which is exactly the point.
