Marcel Deiss

Domaine Marcel Deiss has long been one of Alsace’s top addresses. The family has made wine in the village of Bergheim since the mid-1700s, and the estate was formally founded just after WWII. Since the late 90s they’ve pioneered biodynamic farming.

A Deiss calling card is co-plantation — there’s a mixture of grape varieties (sometimes including a mix of red, pink, and white grapes), even in their Grand Cru sites. By the time of maturity, the fruit taste more of the place in which they’re grown than one particular variety — and since 1990, blind tastings of the berries have proved this point. The practice of co-planting doesn’t always jibe with Alsation expectations of a grape variety tasting like a textbook example, but provides something special and unique.
