The age combined with very high-density plantings (11,000 vines per hectare) restricts yields, leading to tannic, concentrated fruit easily molded into Mee's vin de garde style.

The deep fuchsia color pops out of the glass, indicating it's being drunk a touch young to truly display its eventual kaleidoscopic capabilities. Requisite licorice sits at the core, surrounded by graphite, potted earth, stony shale, cola, and only a hint of fruit—blueberry, raspberry—along with some wood and a touch of baking spices. Tannins are super-fine, slightly sandy with sharp little tightly knit points, so high they almost block the storm of acidity raging across the palate.

An inky concentration of flavors along with the taut structure betrays its intention to sit in a cellar for some five years before it unfolds. Even now I loved this wine and recommend a long decant if you can't wait a few years to enjoy it later.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0044/1208/0163/files/Bottle-of-Domaine-Mee-Godard-Morgon-Corcelette-2023-Red-Wine-Flatiron-SF.jpg?v=1774652516
domaine-mee-godard-morgon-grand-cras-2023-750ml
Domaine Mee Godard Morgon Grand Cras 2023

Grand Cras soils—alluvial and sandy—are very similar to those of Corcelette at the foot of the Côte du Py, also facing southeast. While many of Godard's wines can feel tight and locked up when young, ready for the long haul, here the sandy soils allow for softer tannins and a sun-drenched fruit bowl ready to enjoy now while you wait for the rest. Although with so much fresh-picked strawberry and blueberry, perfumed roses, bright violets, spicy incense, potted earth, and Morgon's quintessential licorice note, there's runway for further development down the road.

Grand Cras 2023 captures the joie de vivre of Beaujolais along with an ability to age in the mid-term. It's blended from three climats named Chaponne, Côte du Py, and Morgon, a climat directly behind the winery, pictured above.

A two-faced wine that best encapsulates the Mee style. At first pour it's deep and dark, as if it's blacking out the sunshine that makes Beaujolais so joyful. But soon, with air, a decant, or a day later, the frivolity reveals itself as levity, spaciousness for a breathtaking experience.

While there's density to the dark cherry fruit, there's also bracing acidity and a forceful mineral core wrapped with crunchy, time-consuming tannins. Graphite is inescapable, along with licorice, very ripe strawberry, plums, spice, smoke, sunshine, and forest floor. It's so young and begs for some cellar time to resolve the mouthful of tannin, but even in its youth, with some air, it opens itself up to you, enticing you, daring you not to drink the whole bottle in one sitting.
