Molettieri

Aglianico is considered by many to be the most “noble” variety of Southern Italy, akin to Nebbiolo in the north. But a tendency to produce massive, international style wines in the late 1990’s and 2000’s saw it fall out of fashion with classical minded wine lovers. These aficionados love to opine about the magical Mastroberardino wines of the 1960s, many claiming that the 1968 is one of the best wines of all time (if you've been lucky enough to try it, you might agree!).

The secret inside the secret of those legendary wines is that many of them were labeled “Montemarano”, which means the fruit was sourced entirely from the Molettieri family vineyards. Indeed the family sold all of its grapes to large wineries like Mastroberardino until a huge earthquake in 1980 made way for government assistance that allowed Salvatore Molettieri to build his own winery. He was finally able to bottle and label his first vintage in 1990.

The Taurasi vineyards are all high elevation (above 1500 feet) and they are farmed with organic principles (no chemicals and only small amounts of copper of SO2).
