Nathan Kendall

Nathan Kendall has garnered glowing reviews since establishing his small winery in 2011; he’s been featured in the New York Times, Wine Enthusiast and the WSJ multiple times over, and yet far too few people know his name. It’s probably due to the teensy scale of production and the remoteness of his milieu.

Nathan set up shop in New York’s Finger Lakes region, the state's largest wine-producing region situated much closer to the Canadian border than any midtown skyscraper. The long, thin and finger-shaped lakes keep temperatures cool during the summer and prevent deep freezes in the winter. It’s not an easy place to grow grapes — it’s cold, prolonged sun isn’t a guarantee, even in the heat of the summer, and it’s damp. It’s even harder to grow them sustainably. But Nathan persists, and has managed to eliminate the use of pesticides and insecticides.
