Renato Vacca was born and raised in Barbaresco. His family’s history there goes back generations. The estate was originally purchased by Renato's great-grandfather in the 1920’s from the son of Domizio Cavazza, the father of Barbaresco. For most of its history the family estate sold the majority of their grapes to Produttori del Barbaresco, the local cooperative where Renato's father, Adriano was a founding member. In 1987, Renato convinced his father to start producing their own wines.

All that personal and generational knowledge made Renato one of the most experienced growers in Barbaresco and he knew its sites and soils intimately. Vineyards at Cantina del Pino are lovingly tended to without the use of harsh chemicals and synthetic fertilizers. In the winery, Renato guided his wines with a soft touch and while a traditionalist in many respects he was not afraid to put his own stamp, such as the inclusion of a small percentage of whole clusters. The wines are powerful and intense yet elegant and supremely refined.

Renato’s wife Franca and his father Adriano, who still directs viticulture at the estate, along with his cousin Aldo Vacca at Produttori are now continuing the work that Renato began.

"Considering the untimely passing of Renato Vacca in March of 2020, there is a lot of emotion coming back to this wine: It has always been an expression of Barbaresco nostalgia and romanticism, even when its creator was alive and well, working in these vines located directly under his family house. The Cantina del Pino 2017 Barbaresco Ovello bears his winemaking imprint with balance and elegance that never misses a beat. This vintage offers more density and concentration for sure, and the positioning of the Ovello cru overlooking the Tanaro River Valley sets the wine up for open-knit characteristics and suave softness. Those impressions are amplified in this vintage but are not overblown. Some 6,000 bottles were released and you get terrific value in this bottle. The wine is set to hit the market in September 2021." -Monica Larner
