Claudio Fenocchio (son of Giacomo) is one of those unsung heroes who makes traditionally-styled Barolo but remains in the shadows of the superstars like Rinaldi or Mascarello. He is just as dedicated to his farming and he makes wine in the same non-interventionist fashion, aging his wines entirely in large Slavonian casks.

What stands out about Fenocchio is his terroir precision. Unlike Bartolo Mascarello, where Maria Teresa blends all her grapes into a single Barolo cuvée, Fenocchio likes to produce cru-specific wines. Tasting through his line-up, we are always stunned at how the characteristic of each vineyard jumps out.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2015 Barolo Bussia is a wine of power, density and gravitas, all of which come through in its decidedly vertical feel and rather somber expression. A whole range of balsamic-infused notes wrap around a core of dark fruit as this potent Barolo shows off its distinctive personality. The 2015 needs time to be at its best, but it is unquestionably impressive, even in the very early going." -Vinous

"Cedar, rose, botanical herb and forest floor aromas swirl around the glass. It's youthfully austere, offering pomegranate, sour cherry, orange zest and baking spice notes alongside tight, close-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Give it a few more years to unwind and fully develop." -Kerin O'Keefe
