Ostatu

The Saenz de Samaniego family has been growing grapes and making wine in Rioja for centuries, so long that the village in which their winery is located shares the family’s. They are Basque to the core — the winery’s name, Ostatu, translates to ‘accommodation’ or ‘guesthouse’, a reference to the c. 18th century building’s first use, and their wines offer all the elegance, limestone minerality, and delicacy hallmark to Rioja’s Alavesa subregion. Farming is certified organic by ENEEK, the Regulatory Council of Organic Agriculture in the Basque Country.

Alavesa is Rioja’s smallest, northernmost, and most prestigious subregion, hemmed in by the Sierra de Cantabria and Sierra de Toloño mountains to the north and the Ebro river to the south. Vineyards are planted at fairly high elevation in the mountains’ foothills, between 500 and 630 meters above sea level. The soils are rich in limestone and clay, a combination which helps to provide ample acidity, linear structure, and plenty of salinity, especially to white wines.
