The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their family has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 93
"The 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is the most complete of the Barolos in this range. Suave and polished (for a young Barolo), the 2015 offers a good bit of early appeal, as all these wines do. Sweet tobacco, dried cherry, mint, crushed flowers and orange zest add layers of nuance to this pretty, expressive Barolo from Fratelli Alessandria." -Antonio Galloni

"Monvigliero in the Verduno township is quickly becoming one of the most celebrated and talked about crus in Barolo. The Fratelli Alessandria estate was among the first to understand its potential, and indeed, this wine was first released in 1978. Fast forward to today and you will find that the 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is an absolutely classic interpretation that stays faithful to past incarnations. The wine offers pretty berry aromas intermingled with spice, licorice and crushed stone. A floral aroma of red rose also appears. The tannins are solid and will require extra years of bottle aging." -Monica Larner
