What is this wine?
Fratelli Alessandria is a historic, family-run estate in Verduno, Piedmont, known for classic Barolo as well as the rare local variety Pelaverga Piccolo. Verduno Pelaverga “Speziale” is the domaine’s benchmark bottling of this indigenous red, made exclusively in Verduno. Pelaverga is beloved for its pale color, delicate fruit, and distinctive spicy character—hence the name Speziale. The 2024 vintage in Piedmont is shaping up fresh and balanced, highlighting the variety’s aromatic charm.

Why get this wine?
Pelaverga is one of Piedmont’s hidden gems: rare, perfumed, and food-friendly. Fratelli Alessandria is among the very best producers of this grape, and their Speziale offers authenticity and character at great value. It’s a perfect change of pace for Pinot Noir or Schiava drinkers looking for something equally elegant but uniquely Piedmontese.

What does this wine taste like?
Light-bodied and fragrant, with red cherry, strawberry, and rose petal lifted by white pepper, clove, and herbal notes. Silky on the palate, with bright acidity and a refreshing finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink young, now through 2027, for its vibrancy and spice. Chill lightly in summer and pair with charcuterie, salumi, or simple pasta dishes.

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their family has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.
