What is this wine?
Giacomo Fenocchio’s Barolo Bussia 2020 (375ml) is a classically styled Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most prestigious crus, located in Monforte d’Alba. The Fenocchio family, now led by Claudio Fenocchio, farms organically and vinifies traditionally—using long macerations on the skins (30–40 days) and aging for over two years in large Slavonian oak casks. This approach highlights the structure, perfume, and minerality of the Bussia vineyard, a site renowned for producing some of Barolo’s most elegant and ageworthy wines.

Why get this wine?
Fenocchio’s Bussia represents the heart of traditional Barolo: pure, expressive, and built to age. The 2020 vintage is beautifully balanced, offering both aromatic lift and fine, ripe tannins—a wine that shows early charm yet will reward patience. In half-bottle format, it’s ideal for enjoying now or for cellaring over the short to medium term, giving access to one of Barolo’s great terroirs in a perfect single-meal size.

What does this wine taste like?
Refined and complex, with aromas of red cherry, rose, licorice, and earth. The palate is structured yet graceful, showing vibrant fruit, fine tannins, and a long, mineral, savory finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from 2025–2038. Decant for 1 hour if drinking young. Excellent with truffle pasta, braised meats, or aged cheeses.

Claudio Fenocchio (son of Giacomo) is one of those unsung heroes who makes traditionally-styled Barolo but remains in the shadows of the superstars like Rinaldi or Mascarello. He is just as dedicated to his farming and he makes wine in the same non-interventionist fashion, aging his wines entirely in large Slavonian casks.

What stands out about Fenocchio is his terroir precision. Unlike Bartolo Mascarello, where Maria Teresa blends all her grapes into a single Barolo cuvée, Fenocchio likes to produce cru-specific wines. Tasting through his line-up, we are always stunned at how the characteristic of each vineyard jumps out.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Barolo Bussia is the most expressive of these Barolos from Claudio Fenocchio. Ample and layered in feel, the 2020 offers up a compelling mix of dark fruit, mocha, spice, leather, dried herbs and incense. There's real penetrating power to the aromatics and flavors here. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural pedigree. The 2020 is beautifully done." -Antonio Galloni

"Claudio Fenocchio's mastery is evident in how he elicits the quintessence of Bussia in this wine. It unfolds with measured elegance, unhurried in its expression. The bouquet is rich with warm Marasca cherries, blood orange zest, fading rose, wild sage, and forest floor. Effortlessly, it glides across the palate, the 2020's tannins are soft, rounded, and plush, embracing the mixed berry preserves sprinkled with baking spices while the lively acidity elevates the experience, ensuring a fresh palate. This stands out as one of the premier wines of this vintage. Drink Now through 2045. *Editors' Choice* (JP)"
