Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 2017

B-P's village Volnay is produced from two small sites that directly abut the 1er Cru of Roncerets. The oldest vines are around 60 years old today. To me, this is a village wine that always displays what I love about Volnay -- that casual sensuousness, that oh-so-satisfying Pinot flavor -- and the 2017 is a particularly good example.

Vincent Bitouzet has been in partnership with famed importer Neil Rosenthal for over 30 years, bringing classic, old-school Burgundy to wine lovers in the U.S. His great-great-grandfather established the domaine, and when Vincent married Anne Prieur she brought along her own family history of winemaking along with significant vineyard holdings. Today the domaine is about 12 hectares in Volnay and Meursault.

All of the Bitouzet-Prieur vineyards are farmed organically. Copper is kept to a minimum and sexual confusion is employed to reduce insect infestations. winemaking is very traditional, native yeast fermentation and aging in mostly used barrique.

"A smoky touch of oak on this wine's nose leads onto a juicy palate that brims with both ripe and tart red cherry. Smoky, toasty oak still swathes the fruit but ample freshness, good concentration and elegant tannins set the tone." -Anne Krebiehl Mw

A bit too oaky for me, especially on day 2…
