It comes from a single 0.82-hectare parcel on the plateau above the grands crus. The vines were planted in 2010 on very white, stony Portlandian limestone, which is younger and harder than the Kimmeridgian soils below. The family calls the parcel their \"new baby,\" and its first vintage was 2014. It's Raveneau's lightest, most fruit-forward wine, and still made in the same old-fashioned way by François Raveneau's sons Bernard and Jean-Marie, with Bernard's daughter Isabelle now working alongside them. Montée de Tonnerre's slopes face south and southwest over shallow Kimmeridgian limestone threaded with veins of blue clay, and its elevation gives the wine the iodine-like minerality and balance that make it famous. The 2023 comes from two lieux-dits within the vineyard, about two-thirds Chapelot and the rest Pied d'Aloup. It was a warmer year, but this bottling still has impressive texture and serious structure, and it will easily reward 15 years or more in the cellar. The house story is a family one: François Raveneau founded the domaine in 1948 by combining his own parcels with those of his wife's family. The domaine's parcel is just 0.75 hectares of vines averaging about 40 years old, set in a natural amphitheater. Isabelle Raveneau says the bowl gets so hot that most of the work there happens in the mornings, because it's too hot to work during the day. As a rule, the house approach is deliberately unshowy: grapes picked by hand, a gentle press, fermentation and malolactic in tank, then about 18 months in older barrels and feuillettes (smaller traditional casks), with very little new wood coming into the cellar. Isabelle, Bernard's daughter, is carrying the domaine, founded in 1948, into its next generation.
