Rudolf Furst

German Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are getting a lot of well-deserved attention right now. In Franken, along the Main River in Bürgstadt and Klingenberg, the Fürst family is producing some of the most compelling examples in the country, not to mention some truly delicious Riesling.

This stretch of western Franken is built on iron-rich Buntsandstein soils, red sandstone that absorbs warmth, reflects light, and gives wines a heady tension between beautiful ripe fruit and open-knit textural lift.

The Fürst holdings are dramatically steep, ancient terraces, planted at high density with a blend of heirloom massale selections and top-quality international clones. And though the Grand Crus of Centgrafenberg and Hundsrück may not yet be household names, they are genuinely world-class terroirs that deserves more love and attention.

The Fürst family is clearly inspired by the best of Burgundy. But these wines do not feel like tribute acts. They are completely confident in their own skin.

The wines ferment naturally in a combination of cement vats and oak barrels. The reds see a generous portion of whole clusters. Long, patient élevage, about 16 months for most cuvées, defines the approach in the cellar. In the glass, the wines are remarkably elegant, finely detailed, loaded with gorgeous fruit, and an absolute joy to drink.
