This is a man who spent a career as a soil researcher and ten years working under Dirk Niepoort before starting his own tiny winery in 2013, and who has identified the soils in every parcel he farms; he owns almost none of it, and calls owning them a multigenerational project. Ethereal is the word his importer uses, and for a Portuguese red that's a rare and welcome thing to be.
