Vin de California

In 2016, wife and husband Kate and Adam Vourvoulis founded Vin de California with one goal in mind; to produce the best naturally made table wines in California. We tend to have a tortured relationship with the concept of table wines in the States. The lower price points and simpler flavors are seen as a detriment but in France, where great table wines are in abundance, they are considered an integral part of the wine landscape (in fact Vin de California is a play on Vin de France), the French government’s designation for table wine. These wines are perfect for everyday rustic meals and picnics. Basically any situation where a thought provoking, complex and considerably more expensive wine would be out of place.

It could be the price of land or the perceived tastes of the less well heeled wine drinker, but in California, most table wines are produced in a way that mimics their more expensive brethren. In order to do that, additives such as wood chips, tannins and color are often added in the hopes that when someone tastes it, they think Napa Cab. Unfortunately the result is usually overtly rich, sweet and stodgy, and no fun to drink. Made from mechanically harvested grapes from all over the state, any flaws are easily remedied by the chemists in the winery’s lab.
